Dragon fruit for breakfast. Bought it at the Sungiven when I went to City Square Centre for Nine Dumplings yesterday.

Went to the new Oidé Coffee location at the Waterfall Building near Granville Island.

Black sesame pastry is very tasty!

A twist? A knot? I don’t like the word cruffin. Dusted with sugar and filled with sweet black sesame.

Some fun packaging at the Sungiven Foods at City Square. Sungiven is pretty great, with stores all over Metro Vancouver.

Photos are of Soda crackers (sea salt) aka shark edition, and (chive) aka caveman and dinosaur buddy.

I didn’t buy candied olives, but I did buy candied plums.

Cocktail orange for breakfast. Also known as a mandelo, for “Mandarin + Pomelo”.

All citrus are actually hybrids of mandarin, pomelo, and citron (chart via Wikipedia).

I collected some links on the FoodWiki and learned about the UC Citrus Experiment Station.

I made up a recipe for Whole Wheat Coconut Waffles. It’s a modification of the Buttermilk Waffles recipe I use with my vertical waffle maker.

Jazzed my way through making a beef stew with lots of onions, red wine, and roasted red peppers.

It’s similar to Spanish Chilindron, when I went to go look for recipes afterwards.

I was thinking about paprika, but just added some tomato paste & Calabrian chillies right at the end.

Trying out Phở Jade “the place for noodle soup lovers”.

It’s got a pretty big menu. I tried a large bowl of pho with all the meats to get a baseline.

It’s good! Fragrant floral broth.

We were in North Van today and went to a Filipino restaurant Alloz Grill for lunch.

I had garlic rice with beef stew & a sour tamarind pork soup (pictured), Rachael had all-day-breakfast Longsilog. We got a leche flan to take home.

Chad and his wife Kumie gave me a bit of their family miso back in June, in a container in this bag with instructions.

  • cool dark place
  • mix once in summer
  • ready to eat fall

And: おいしくなった, roughly translated as “it will have become delicious”

It is delicious! Thank you friends!

Bread is complete. I’ll let it cool, wrap it, and see how it tastes for breakfast tomorrow.

The “no knead” technique was first widely shared in 2006 in the NY Times Cooking section.

Here’s my entry for it in the FoodWiki.

Made lard by rendering pork fat in a crock pot (middle jar, white).

I added in 6 yellow onions and let that cook overnight (jar on the right).

The first jar on the left is the broth + fat I scooped out of the onions.

Our oven bottom burner is broken. It’s going to be painful dealing with our property manager to get fixed.

But it does have me thinking about the Anova Precision Oven.

Anyone have first hand experience with it or something similar — countertop convection + steam?
