I added Rio Friendly Meats, a butcher at 2477 E Hastings in #EastVan, to #OpenStreetMap via Organic Maps.

Learning that Apple Maps has guides (collections of places) and ability to contribute photos to places (I don’t really ever use it).
Organic Maps has bookmarks which can be organized into lists.
Here’s Bloedel Conservatory, a classic #Vancouver destination for me when it rains for weeks.
I think the future is divergent mutual incomprehension and that’s good.
Part of a post by Venkatesh Rao @vgr on Farcaster. He wrote Divergentism which goes into more detail.
Installed linkding shared bookmarking on the #CommonsComputer
As written up in the link, I’m still working out how to describe these shared services.
I have an OpenCollective for #ToolsForThoughtRocks but want to set things up that people can join the commons generally.
I’m on Bowen Island for the holidays visiting my parents, so here are pictures from our usual Killarney Lake walk. Views East and West from the Meadow Bridge.
#BowenIsland #CrippenPark
Tinkering with Organic Maps, realizing I only have one bookmark in it: Mirika, a cafe in Berlin with great coffee, pastries, and classic German hot lunches.
Organic Maps is no-charge, open source offline maps based on OpenStreetMap.
RSS and Mastodon could fit in the same app…I’d start with the social media experience: the single timeline of posts. Very simple sidebar. No article view. No read/unread status — just position in the timeline.

Did you know that Skipper Otto community supported fishery has multiple #EastVan community pick up spots?
I’m picking up my last order of the season at the Off the Rail Brewing spot on Adanac off Clark: conveniently just a couple of blocks from my house.
I made lasagna yesterday. Like most of my cooking, I just sort of winged it.
I did buy some ingredients earlier in the week, including Italpasta Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles.
Here’s the package recipe, also on FoodWiki along with notes on my own recipe.
Most productivity advice is BS…The only productivity advice that matters is getting clarity on what matters to you. You just feel differently about the world when you know what you care about.

The next version of Wiki.js sounds like it could be a pretty good Gitbook replacement.
And yes, it’s a Cloudron app of course ;)

I am attending IPFS Connect in Istanbul!
And also testing the Sparkles micropub client posting to MicroDotBlog, which has an RSVP type.
That’s what social media did for people. We could click on a reply button, and in the same place we were reading, address a response specifically to that person, creating a thread. A conversation. There’s basically no way to do that in blogs or using RSS”

Mah Milk Bar on Victoria Drive is now open:
Mah Milk Bar is part neighbourhbood grocery store and part cozy coffee shop. We are passionate about supporting local brands, making delicious coffee and creating a warm, welcoming spot for the community to meet!
Tasty coffee & chai!

The description is by her uncle of how moonshine got made in 1940s Manitoba.
Put (sugar) in a barrel with yeast and water. Add some barley, wheat, potatoes. Not in the house because the police come check. Put it in the bush.
I have been looking for a fresh Asian noodle source in Vancouver for a long time.
I bought some Win Full Ramen at Donalds and made it for lunch today: the ramen was excellent.
And Win Full Foods seems awesome: looks like you can pick up from their store in East Van.
From Robin Sloan’s latest I learned about the singer Lorde’s newsletter:
it feels like…a long rambly email from a (very smart, hugely successful) friend. Lorde’s messages do not belong to the internet of Twitter or Instagram
Quoting Lorde:
Everyone’s gotten really good at the same thing.
I’m in St. Louis for a conference and went to a cute local coffee shop, Goshen Coffee.
I’m slowly starting to gather coffee shop stickers on my travel mug.
Also pictured: wall of colourful bean packaging, dogs of Goshen, and seasonal beans.
However, browsers selling users to search engines to keep the web going is a bit like selling weapons in a war zone to bankroll cancer research.
Robin Berjon suggests that we need to fix search on the Internet. And yes it means figuring out how to fund browsers, too.

That thing where it’s been a long week, but it’s also been too long since you cooked a proper meal, and that proper meal is delicious pulled pork, but you don’t have a dishwasher, and you have to slog through a mountain of dishes.
I’m in London, Ontario for the week. We’ve explored a couple of “variety stores”, which are corner cafes / brunch / diner places.
Here’s brunch at The Bag Lady Variety. Shared a cinnamon swirl French toast with maple syrup, side of bacon, and fruit bowl. Plus 50s-60s Canadiana. Ceramic poodles!
Was at Raincity Games at International Village Mall.
Bought Teenage Mutant Dirtbags (mutant animals with attitude) & Scum and Villainy (scifi space capers using Forged in the Dark).
Plus photos of Faerie Fire & Witch-Craft by local #Vancouver makers, & Dialect about language.

This is a model I’ve been waiting to appear! Who wants to build in Vancouver / BC?
Spent some time working out of Timbertrain Depot.
On my way out, I got to taste test this espresso tonic with orange juice.
Choice of name was “Orange is the new Black” (overplayed in my opinion) or “Clockwork Orange” (dark, mysterious, my vote). Delicious with a fruity bright Ethiopian bean.
jwz writes up some Mastodon’ts. The big one is to give the original post (OP) control over replies in the thread. So an OP is more like a blog.
I initially thought this was a bad idea, but yeah, if you’re doing a In Reply To, you shouldn’t get to ride along the OP reach.
From Scout Magazine comes word of Mah Milk Bar opening on Victoria Drive in the old South China Seas location.
In Australia [a milk bar is] a go-to spot for daily basics, synonymous with a corner store
This sounds like a great community oriented place!

Hanging outside with Kaz the cat for his evening outdoor time on the deck. Last night in Nanaimo, back home in Vancouver tomorrow.
Picture of the New Brighton Park Pool from yesterday. Not many people and amazing cloud formations over the north shore mountains.

Just got my Similkameen Valley variety pack of wine dropped off.
Here’s a quick photo of the label for Pamplemousse Jus. I’ll add all the bottles to the FoodWiki later.
This post by Devon Zuegel describing the unconference toolkit is great.
I’ve been meaning to write down something similar, this is an amazing resource to share.
What is an #unconference ?

New Brighton Park Pool in #EastVan
We like to go swimming at least once a week in the evenings. Last night it was really empty — maybe 20 people total.
The sky, sun, and mountain views are all amazing and we always enjoy our swim. Lucky to have our #Vancouver public pools.
Got out of a movie tonight and saw this amazing sky above #Vancouver on the way home.
We’re having a #DWebYVR catch-up in the collective garden at Scotia & East 4th.
It’s run by coFoodVancouver which is all about collaboration + food.
It’s my first time here. It reminds me of the back deck at c-base in Berlin a bit.
I went to the New Media Gallery “DUST” exhibition today.
These are pictures of two of the pieces, Herman Kolgen’s Dust Surface (video on flat panels), and Michael Saup’s DustVR (particulate live sensor data with VR visualization).
The 3rd piece has a gasp worthy surprise that I’ll leave secret.
Bottled one batch of tepache and started a second.
This new version has the leftover skin and core from one pineapple, 3/4 cup of organic cane sugar, fresh ginger, bay leaves, szechuan peppercorn. First time I’ve used savoury spices.
Pulpfiction Books has a great thread talking about their business & why they are closing their Kitsilano location in Vancouver. What a great line about retail:
When we opened Kits, 21 years ago, I think there was still a case to be made for a business model I’ll call “a person sitting in a room full of interesting things.” – @pfbvan
Killing Community on community as villages, whereas scaled social media prevents this through a “sustained large influx of strangers”.
It’s no longer a village, but something like a train station. The default mode of being is passing through. People come and go, and there’s no real sense of belonging.
Ben Thompson’s Stratechery post on Apple Vision gives us a framework for spatial computing taking on work (displacing multiple monitors) as well as consumption of immersive content.
This has very much been my thought about this category.
building the next generation of social tools…as infrastructure on which existing and nascent communities can build places that are safe and connected, joyful and challenging, wide-ranging and deeply human.

Went to Tall Shadow Bakery both days this weekend.
Saturday was later in the day and lots was sold out. Tried their pizza pocket pastry & a giant square of cornbread.
Sunday we went early to try the “pop tarts” pastry. Filled with berries, not to sweet. Tasty!

Morels & Goat with white wine cream sauce and asparagus.
And pies for dessert! Victoria sponge with rhubarb, salted honey cheesecake, and grapefruit & sweet vermouth.
I just finished an intro call with a community mesh networking project here in #Vancouver called #StolonMesh www.stolonmesh.ca/, being initiated through 221A.
I’m excited about supporting this with #DWebYVR after the first time we tried this back in 2006!
We were on Bowen Island for the long weekend and visited a couple of stores in Artisan Square.
We had a great time meeting Dana Lee Brown and her farm-to-hangar clothing, recently covered in Scout Magazine.
I got a picture of her examples of cotton & wool from raw to finished cloth.
On Thursday I went for an afternoon bike ride out to Burnaby Lake along the Central Valley Greenway.
Turns out this bench has public wifi access.

How it started, how it’s going. Me at 7 and 48.
My parents are scanning old photos so I’ll share a couple. And I got back from the barber yesterday ;)
Went for a walk around the new trail around Grafton Lake on #BowenIsland. So many different greens - ferns, moss, skunk cabbage. And massive stumps from the original old growth. Nice to have a new-to-me walk on the island!
My first computer, a TI-99/4A. This is me at home on #BowenIsland in 1985 at 10 years old.
It’s plugged into a black & white TV. I eventually got a cassette recorder and saved BASIC programs to it.
It was discontinued so bought on sale at Sears? Or Eaton’s?
